My mother called on a rainy Tuesday afternoon while I was reviewing color proofs for my first picture book and Ethan was downstairs stretching a fresh canvas.
“Your father and I were thinking,” she began, in the careful tone people use when they know they are stepping onto a floor they once cracked themselves, “maybe everyone could come to West Hartford this year. Just something small.”

That was all.
At two thirty, she showed up in a navy coat with the baby on her hip and none of the old polish intact. Motherhood had not made her softer exactly.
